Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme visa

RSMS Visa

The Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme helps businesses in regional, remote or low population growth areas, outside the major metropolitan centres of Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sydney, Newcastle, Wollongong and Melbourne, to recruit skilled workers to fill positions that are unable to be filled from the local labour market.

The subclass 187 visa is a permanent resident visa for skilled workers who want to work in regional Australia. The 187 visa allows the holder to stay indefinitely in Australia, travel to and from the country, work, bring family to work or study and enrol in Medicare.

The employer sponsorship process includes two steps:
  1. Nomination by an approved Australian employer
  2. Visa application under the nominated stream
This visa has 3 streams:
  1. Temporary Residence Transition (TRT)

    The Temporary Residence Transition stream is for subclass 457 visa holders who have worked for their employer for at least the last 2 years and the employer wants to offer them a permanent position in that same occupation.

  2. Direct Entry (DE)

    The Direct Entry stream is for persons who are applying for an RSMS visa from outside Australia or are applying from within Australia but are ineligible for the Temporary Residence Transition stream.

  3. Agreement

    The Agreement stream is for persons who are being sponsored by an employer who is a party to a labour agreement.

Who can get the subclass 187 visa? To apply, applicants must be nominated by an approved Australian employer in regional Australia to work in an approved occupation. If you are not sure whether your occupation is approved, please contact us. In order to qualify for this visa, most applicants must also show that:

  1. They have the appropriate level of English language ability

  2. They are under the age of 50.

  3. They have the necessary skills and qualifications to do the job, including a membership, licence or registration if it is mandatory in order to perform the nominated occupation in Australia

  4. They and their accompanying family members satisfy standard health and character requirements.

  5. They commit to remain in the position for two years.

Important to Know – Your Obligations: You and your family must comply with all visa conditions and Australian laws. You need to make a genuine effort to begin employment with your employer within six months of the day the visa was granted or of your first entry to Australia if you were granted this visa while you were outside of Australia.
